History of the Library

The Library Media Center at Longview Farm Elementary resides in the former stable area of the of the Show Arena Barn at Historic Longview Farm.  The farm was built in 1914 by Roberta A. Long of Kansas City.  The Show Arena Barn is believed to be the first building to be completed.

The stall walls and doors were removed and reused in other parts of the school, but the wooden support posts and loft floor above remain exposed.  One stall, said to be the site of the birth of the last colt on the farm, was reinstalled and is used for story time with younger students.
The windows on the south wall of the library are unique.  They once were the doors and windows of each horse's stall.

The Library also houses a cast iron saddle rack found in the stables during renovation.  On it is mounted a side-saddle of the style and period used by Loula Long and her sister Sallie.
